Kenosha, WI November 13, 2010
Molly Seidel of Hartland, Wisconsin ran away from the field of runners at the 1000 meter mark en route to winning the fourth annual Brooks Border War at the Wayne Dannehl Cross Country Course at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Seidel, the Division 3 Wisconsin State Cross Country Champion, covered the 5000 meter race in an official time of 17:11, the third fastest time run on the course by a high school girl in the history of the course. The course record of 17:01 was set by Claire Durkin of Illinois at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships in 2007. "I really wanted to come and run a PR (personal record) in the 5k, and I really wanted to get under 18 (minutes). So it really worked out pretty well" said the junior from University Lake School.
Dan Schubert of Appleton, Wisconsin responded to a surge made by Juan Carrera of Illinois at the halfway point in the race and continued to push the pace to win the boys race with a time of 15:33, the fastest time run on the course by a high school runner this year. Schubert, the Division 1 Wisconsin State Cross Country Champion from Appleton East High School, began to run away from the field at the 3000 meter mark to finish 22 seconds ahead of second place finisher Sam Penzenstadler of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. "Don't let up, push it up the uphills, cruise down the downhills and once I got to the opening (with 300 meters to go) I knew I was good. I just finished as hard as I could," said Schubert who was running on the course as a preview for the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships Midwest Regional.
Both Seidel and Schubert indicated that they will compete at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships Midwest Regional on November 27 at the University of Wisconsin - Parkside to try to qualify for the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships. The top ten male and top ten female finishers in the Midwest Regional will compete at the prestigious Foot Locker National Championships in San Diego, California on December 11.
